The biennial Photonics Ireland conference opening reception on 1 September at Cork City Hall featured the launch of a new photonics-based technology platform for Ireland. Damien English, T.D., Ireland's Minister of State for Skills, Research and Innovation, officially launched Photonics Ireland, Making Light Work, a strategy document to grow Ireland's photonics sector and a plan for Ireland to benefit from future opportunities expected from photonics.

SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs was on hand for the launch, and is chairing a session on Industry and Entrepreneurship, sponsored by LIGHTalks, on Thursday during the three-day conference. Speakers are Peter Chang (Intel), Gary Leyden (NRDC), Frank Symth (Pilot Photonics), Fionnuala Healy (Trinity College Dublin), and Declan O'Mahony (HeartSine Technologies).
