Nader Engheta

In recognition of his contributions to science, technology, and society, SPIE Fellow Nader Engheta was presented with an honorary doctorate from Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland 7 October. This is his second honorary doctorate degree this year.
Engheta is the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania (USA). He has collaborated with Aalto University and the Helsinki University of Technology since the 1980s, promoting research cooperation between the two universities.
Widely known as a pioneer in his research of electromagnetic metamaterials, optical metatronics, and nanoscale plasmonics, Engheta is interested in optical nanostructure modeling, nanoantennas, nanocircuits, bio-inspired sensing and imaging, and the reverse-engineering of polarization in nature. Along with his team, Engheta continues to investigate the concept of optical lumped nanocircuits and their relation to material nanostructures. His ultimate goal is to realize the possibility of nanoscale information processing in nanoelectronics with the use of light.
Engheta has been an active member of SPIE since 2007, and a Fellow since 2011. He has co-chaired the Metamaterials, Metadevices, and Metasystems conference at SPIE Optics + Photonics and also delivered a plenary presentation on sculpting waves in 2015.
Engheta also received the SPIE Gold Medal, the society’s highest honor, in 2015 for his "transformative and groundbreaking contributions to optical engineering of metamaterials and nanoscale plasmonics, metamaterial-based optical nanocircuits, and biologically inspired optical imaging."
