SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, recently signed cooperative agreements to promote collaboration between its members and members of optical science societies in Spain, Poland, Korea, and Italy.
An agreement with Sociedad Espanola de Optica (Spanish Optical Society/SEDOPTICA), signed in December 2013 by SEDOPTICA 2013 president Joaquin Campos Acosta, pictured at right, and SPIE 2013 president William Arnold, aims to connect members of the international photonics community through the exchange of information and collaboration on events and student outreach and education projects.
Former SPIE and SEDOPTICA president Maria Yzuel, along with SPIE Senior Member Ignacio Moreno, facilitated the agreement, which also provides registration and exhibition discounts at SPIE- and SEDOPTICA-sponsored events, and encourages partnerships on events of mutual interest.
SPIE will also provide $1,000 in annual funding toward a joint student award, allowing a winner selected by SEDOPTICA to travel to a SPIE meeting of his/her choice within 12 months of receiving the award.
SPIE also recently signed a similar cooperative agreement with Angela Piegari, president of the Società Italiana di Ottica e Fotonica (SIOF) based in Florence, Italy, and renewed agreements with the Optical Society of Korea (OSK) and the Photonics Society of Poland (PSP).
OSK was established in 1989 and has approximately 3000 members from research universities, industries, and government institutes in Korea. OSK has seven divisions: optical science, optical technology, photonics, quantum electronics, optical signal processing, biomedical optics, and display.
PSP president and SPIE Fellow Tomasz Wolinski of the Warsaw University of Technology signed the PSP-SPIE agreement with SPIE 2014 President H. Philip Stahl.
SPIE maintains numerous cooperative agreements with optics and photonics organizations worldwide.
