MJ Soileau elected Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences 17 November 2016
SPIE Fellow MJ Soileau, of the University of Central Florida College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL), has been elected as a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the Academy’s highest honor. Every year, the General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Sciences elects the most prominent foreign scientists in the international scientific community as Foreign Members. This year, others elected to the RAS include Nobel Peace Prize winners Henry Kissinger, Serge Haroche, and Martinus Veltman (physics), Roger D. Kornberg, Jean-Pierre Sauvage, and Dan Shechtman (chemistry), and Kenneth J. Arrow (economics). Soileau is a Distinguished Professor of Optics & Photonics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Physics at CREOL and is also the Vice President for Research. His research interests include the nonlinear optical properties of materials and laser-induced damage. Soileau has been an active Fellow of SPIE since 1988. He served as the Society’s Chair of the Symposia Committee in 1994, Secretary in 1995, Vice President in 1996, and President in 1997. Soileau was also recognized with the SPIE Gold Medal in 2008 for his outstanding contributions to laser-induced damage research and optics education. For more information:
