SPIE Fellow Michael T. Eismann, chief scientist for the Sensors Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), was recognized for his sustained accomplishments, exemplary public service, and demonstrated consistent and lasting dedication to the mission of the US Air Force during the Presidential Rank Awards Leadership Summit 13 December in Washington, D.C.

“I am truly honored to be recognized at the Presidential level for my contributions to the Air Force, and am humbled to be part of this amazing group of senior executives who are so dedicated to the mission of securing our national interests,” Eismann said in a news release issued by AFRL. Presidential Rank Awards are the top award a civilian federal employee can receive and are given by the President of the United States to exemplary federal leaders who have overseen successful federal initiatives with a sweeping impact.

Eismann was also recognized by SPIE this year, winning the 2018 Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award. He serves as editor-in-chief of SPIE's Optical Engineering journal, and in the past has served as a board member of SPIE, and chairman of SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing. He was elected a Fellow of the Society in 2010.
