Michael Eismann named Chief Scientist of Sensors Directorate at AFRL

photo of Michael EismannSPIE Fellow Michael Eismann has been promoted to Chief Scientist of the Sensors Directorate at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He serves as the directorate's principal scientific and technical adviser to the Air Force and U.S. Department of Defense.

As Chief Scientist, Eismann is responsible for the content and quality of the Air Force's technical direction of a research program with a $200 million annual budget. The directorate encompasses electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensor research for all Air Force customers.

Eismann, a member of the SPIE Board of Directors and editor-in-chief of Optical Engineering, is an internationally recognized authority on passive infrared imaging and hyperspectral remote sensing, and continues to perform both basic and applied defense research in these areas.

He is the author of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing (SPIE Press, 2012), which is referenced in a video interview with Eismann on SPIE.TV. A member the 2015 Steering Committee for SPIE Defense + Security, Eismann has written or co-authored over 40 papers published in the SPIE Digital Library.

Eismann joined the AFRL in 1996 as a senior research engineer in the Electro-Optical Targeting Branch and became an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Engineering and Management, AFRL in 2005. He was promoted from Senior Scientist of Electro-Optical and Infrared Sensors in Sensors Directorate to Chief Scientist in December 2014.

He holds a PhD in electro-optics from University of Dayton, Ohio.
