SPIE Member Cody Kreischer, 59, a Master Optician and president of Kreischer Optics, passed away 13 June 2017 in his hometown of McHenry, Illinois. Cody took over as president of Kreischer Optics in 1987, building the company to become one of the most respected manufacturers of custom glass lenses in the country. But his passion for the industry began early. Starting in the fifth grade, he helped his father, Emil Kreischer, founder of Kreischer Optics, clean and maintain the shop and machinery.

By college, he had compiled years of manufacturing experience. After completing his Bachelor of Science degree (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he majored in physics and mathematics, he went on to receive his Master’s at the University of Arizona's Optical Sciences Center with emphasis on lens design and optical testing.

According to his obituary, educating upcoming future Master Opticians was very important to Cody. He donated optics labs both at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the Optical Sciences Center at the University of Arizona, and gave public lectures and presented papers to share his great understanding of optics.

An active member of the Society, he shared his knowledge at SPIE events, as a presenter, on program committees, and as session chair. He was the primary exhibit liaison for Kreischer Optics for more than a decade, bringing his company to Optics + Photonics, Photonics West, Optifab, and Defense + Commercial Sensing.
