SPIE President Bill Arnold (ASML) was among featured speakers at the 22nd annual Optics & Photonics Japan 2013 in Nara 12-14 November.
The event, organized by the Optical Society of Japan (OSJ), an affiliate of the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), included a keynote talk on optical lattice clocks by Hidetoshi Katori of University of Tokyo.

Arnold presented a special lecture on "Semiconductor lithography from 1000 to 10nm."
Symposium topics included material manipulation and light resonance trapping, deployment of noninterference 3D sensing technology, and optical technology in light spatial multiplexing communication.
After the conference, SPIE Fellow and Osaka University professor Satoshi Kawata hosted Arnold and SPIE Senior Director Andrew Brown for a tour of the university's Photonics Advanced Research Center. Kawata is the incoming president of JSAP, a two-year position beginning in March 2014.
Arnold also met with SPIE Osaka University Student Chapter leaders, who reported on a successful conference they presented in September with the support of a FOCUS conference grant from SPIE.
With SPIE Vice President Toyohiko Yatagai, professor at the Center for Optical Research and Education at Utsunomiya University and a past president of OSJ, Arnold and Brown also visited Horiba, a manufacturer of precision instruments for environmental, medical and scientific measurement and analysis.

SPIE President Bill Arnold and Vice President Toyohiko Yatagai hosted a dinner in Nara for SPIE Fellows and OSJ dignitaries. Among those attending, from left in front, were SPIE Senior Director Andrew Brown, SPIE Fellow Kazuyoshi Itoh (Osaka University), OSJ President Masanobu Watanabe (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), Arnold, Yatagai, OSJ Past President and SPIE Fellow Matsuo Takeda (CORE, Utsunomiya University), and SPIE Fellow Kazuo Kuroda (CORE, Utsunomiya University).
