SPIE Fellow Jannick Rolland, the Brian J. Thompson Professor of Optical Engineering at the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, is the recipient of the 2017 Edmund A. Hajim Outstanding Faculty Award.
The Edmund A. Hajim Outstanding Faculty Award recognizes excellence in teaching, research, and service to the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester. In addition to directing the Robert E. Hopkins Center for Optical Engineering, she is also recognized for influencing the creation of the Center for Freeform Optics (CeFO) a joint venture with UNC-Charlotte which she directs, and co-founding LighTopTech, an optical technology company. Most significantly, it is her presence as an inspired and effective educator that also earns her this award. Dean Wendi Heinzelman notes, "Jannick is not only a distinguished researcher, but also an incredibly effective leader. I cannot think of a more deserving candidate for this award."
Rolland became an SPIE Fellow in 2008 for specific achievements in optical systems engineering and design. Her involvement with SPIE includes serving as associate editor for the SPIE journal Optical Engineering and as chair of numerous sessions at SPIE conferences. She extends her teaching talent to the SPIE community teaching her course, Applying Freeform Optical Surfaces in Imaging Optics, at SPIE events.
