DeLyle Eastwood, a distinguished researcher in fluorescence spectroscopy and SPIE Member whose work helped enable the identification of oil spills in open water, died 30 October in Pullman, Washington, at 82.
Dr. Eastwood was listed in Who's Who in Fluorescence, and was awarded the 1978 DOT Silver Medal for Oil Spill Identification and other honors.
She earned the PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chicago, and worked as a researcher at Lockheed Martin, the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and was a research professor at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and the University of Idaho.
Her involvement with SPIE included numerous publications, and she served as chair of the conference on Pattern Recognition, Chemometrics, and Imaging for Optical Environmental Monitoring.
