SPIE President H. Philip Stahl and SPIE Senior Director Andrew Brown visited several optics and photonics labs in Germany last month, seeing technologies that covered a wide variety of in work in areas such as optical fabrication and metrology, lasers, semiconductors, and additive manufacturing.
Above, Stahl met with Christine Wünsche and Rolf Rascher at the Technische Hochschule Deggendorf.
Managing Director Stephan Roth (center) hosted Stahl at the Bayerisches Laserzentrum.
Stahl gave a talk on optical metrology for the SPIE Student Chapter at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (above), and met with visiting professor Craig Arnold, a member of the Princeton University spin-out company TAG Optics which won a Prism Award for Photonics Innovation in 2013.
Also in Erlangen, Stahl and Brown were hosted by Director Philip Russell, chair of the conference on Electro-Optical Remote Sensing at SPIE Security + Defence, at the Max-Planck-Institut für die Physik des lichts.
At the Universität Stuttgart Institut Technische Optik (ITO) Stahl was hosted by ITO Director and SPIE Fellow professor Wolfgang Osten, and also met with SPIE Fellow and former board member, Mitsuo Takeda, who is at Stuttgart while on sabbatical from Utsunomiya University, and Stuttgart professor Alois Herkommer; from left above, Herkommer, Takeda, Stahl, and Osten.
Above, students and faculty at Stuttgart attended a presentation by Stahl.
Stahl gave an update on the James Webb Space Telescope to the Optics Students Karlsruhe (OSKar) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
At TRUMPF, Stahl met with Managing Partner and President of the Laser and Electronics division Peter Leibinger (at left) and Director of International Sales Klaus Löffler, Past President of the Laser Institute of America (at right).
SPIE visitors also toured optics displays and attended an opening celebration at the new Zeiss Forum in Oberkochen featuring American astronaut Buzz Aldrin (above) as speaker; below, a performer at the event.
