SPIE Fellow Gabe Spalding, a professor of physics at Illinois Wesleyan University, will join the Board of Directors for the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). Elected at the association’s latest annual meeting, Spalding will begin his three-year term at the close of the next meeting in January 2019. Board members of AAPT represent physics teachers at all education levels, including graduate school, undergraduate programs, high school and middle school.
In a statement released by Illinois Wesleyan University, Spalding said, “By leveraging the power of community, we can, together, help improve what is possible for physics teachers at all levels and, through them, impact the lives of our students, and what they, in turn, bring to the world.”
Spalding brings the same enthusiasm to his involvement with SPIE. He has served as conference and session chair, routinely presented at Optics + Photonics and Photonics West, and taught a course at Optics + Photonics for nearly a decade. He is the advisor for the Illinois Wesleyan University SPIE Student Chapter as well. For all these contributions to the SPIE community and to the field of nanotechnology, he was elected Fellow of the Society in 2014.
