SPIE Fellow Nader Engheta of University of Pennsylvania, a pioneer in the fields of optical and electrodynamics, has won the inaugural Engineering Award from SINA, the Spirit of Iranian Noted Achievers.
Engheta is the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor at the Penn School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-chair of the Metamaterials: Fundamentals and Applications conference at SPIE Optics + Photonics.
His research activities span a broad range of areas including metamaterials and plasmonics, about which he gave a plenary talk at SPIE Photonics West 2011; nano-optics; nanophotonics; graphene metamaterials; bio-inspired sensing and imaging; and reverse-engineering of polarization vision in nature.
One of his most innovative contributions has been in the development of the field of optical metatronics, as a new circuit paradigm for information processing at the nanometer scale.
Born and raised in Tehran, Engheta was driven by his curiosity about how things work. As a result, he earned a PhD in electrical engineering and physics from California Institute of Technology and many other awards and achievements, including being selected as one of 50 leaders in science and technology by Scientific American Magazine in 2006.
The SINA Award in Engineering recognizes an Iranian who has an outstanding achievement in any field of engineering. It will be presented 12 October at Harvard University.
