SPIE Fellow Duncan Moore, professor and vice provost for entrepreneurship at the University of Rochester, has received the 2015 Leadership Award from the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster (RRPC).
The award is given to an individual who works with RRPC members and the general public to promote the Rochester region's optics, photonics and imaging industry.
A former dean of engineering and applied sciences at UR, Moore is currently the Rudolf and Hilda Kingslake Professor of Optical Engineering and a professor of biomedical engineering and business administration. He received his master's and PhD degrees at UR.
In his role as vice provost, he manages the Kauffman Campus Initiative, which aims to enhance entrepreneurship programs at the university. He is also the founder and former president of Gradient Lens Corp, a Rochester company that manufactures the Hawkeye boroscope.
Moore has extensive experience in science and technology policy, research, and business, and he is an expert in gradient index (GRIN) optics, solar cell design, computer-aided design, and the manufacture of optical systems.
In the 1990s, he chaired the successful Hubble Independent Optical Review Panel that was organized to determine the correct prescription of the Hubble Space Telescope. He currently chairs the Product-Integrity-Team for the James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble's successor.
He is the recipient of many awards, including the 2006 SPIE Gold Medal, in recognition of his innovative research in GRIN lenses.
Moore is the author or co-author of numerous papers on optics and is a former president of the Bureau of the International Commission for Optics (ICO).
The RRPC also presented its 2015 Entrepreneur Award to Bob Bicksler, CEO of JML Optical Industries, at its September annual meeting. Paul Conrow, a science teacher at East High School received the RRPC Education Award.
