Can Bayram awarded the 2018 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Optics 26 November 2018
SPIE Senior Member Can Bayram, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and group leader for the Innovation COmpound semiconductoR LABoratory (ICORLAB), has been awarded the 2018 IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Optics by the International Commission for Optics (ICO). He is only the second awardee of this distinction from the United States. The prize was established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in 2005. The ICO as an Affiliated Commission of IUPAP, adopted the prize in 2008 and selects a scientist annually who has made noteworthy contributions to applied optics and photonics during a maximum of eight years of research experience after having earned a PhD degree. Bayram was recognized for revolutionizing the way graphene has been employed, and making major contributions to III-V photonic devices. He will receive the IUPAP Young Scientist Medal, a citation, and a 1000€ award at a major ICO meeting where he is also expected to deliver an invited presentation. Bayram has been an active Member of the Society since serving as Treasurer for the Northwestern University SPIE Student Chapter. He serves on the Scholarship Committee and has authored chapters for SPIE Press. He has presented several times at SPIE events and has served as conference chair, session chair, and on program committees.
