Barry Johnson elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics 03 May 2018
SPIE Fellow and Past President R. Barry Johnson has been elected to the rank of Fellow by the Institute of Physics (IoP). Based in the United Kingdom, the Institute of Physics is a global scientific membership society working to advance physics for the benefit of all. IoP grants the rank of Fellow for physicists who "indicate a very high level of achievement in physics and an outstanding contribution to the profession." Johnson was a long time faculty member in the College of Engineering, Technology and Physical Sciences at Alabama A&M University. He currently consults with several clients and remains as Chief Scientist for Alabama A&M University's Research Institute. He has published dozens of papers and hold 12 patents in the United States. Johnson served as president of SPIE in 1987, but has been active with the Society in many other roles. He chaired several conference committees, taught courses in lens design, and authored papers for SPIE publications. He has authored several books, and in 2012 received the Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for Lens Design Fundamentals, Second Edition, a substantially revised and expanded update to the late Rudolf Kingslake's 1978 First Edition. For his many contributions to SPIE, he was made Fellow of the Society in 1984. For more information:
