SPIE Fellow Aydogan Ozcan of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Senior Member Andrea Alù of the University of Texas at Austin are among 31 National Finalists who have been selected for the 2016 Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists. Each of the National Finalists is eligible to be named one of three 2016 Blavatnik National Laureates, which includes an unrestricted cash prize of $250,000.
Ozcan is Chancellor's Professor at UCLA, an HHMI Professor with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, leading the Bio- and Nano-Photonics Laboratory at UCLA Electrical Engineering and Bioengineering Departments, Associate Director of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at UCLA, and founder and a member of the Board of Directors of Holomic LLC. He received the SPIE 2013 Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award and the SPIE 2011 Early Career Achievement Award.
Alù is an associate professor and the Cockrell Family Dean's Chair in Engineering Excellence Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Texas in Austin. His research interests span metamaterials, plasmonics, electromagnetics, optical scattering, cloaking and transparency, and acoustic devices. He was awarded the SPIE 2012 Early Career Achievement Award.
Finalists were selected from 308 nominations of faculty-rank researchers from 148 United States academic and research institutions. Honorees are named in diverse disciplines spanning life sciences, physical science and engineering, and chemistry. Both Alù and Ozcan are recognized in physical sciences and engineering.
National Laureates and Finalists will be honored at an annual awards ceremony on 12 September 12 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
