    University of Arizona Optical Sciences students honored with Astronaut Scholarship

    University of Arizona (UA) Optical Sciences students and SPIE Members Benjamin Cromey and Travis Sawyer have each received a $10,000 Astronaut Scholarship.

    Benjamin was awarded an SPIE Scholarship in 2013, which he used for school expenses, and Sawyer was awarded an SPIE Scholarship in 2014, which he intends to use to subsidize his research.

    Founded by six members of NASA's Mercury 7 mission, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) has a mission to "aid the United States in retaining its world leadership in science and technology by providing college scholarships for the very best and brightest students pursuing science, technology, engineering or math degrees.

    In addition, the ASF strongly promotes the importance of science and technology to the general public by facilitating unique programs and special events."
