Ashlesha Patil is the 2018-19 recipient of the $20,000 SPIE Graduate Student Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences, part of the Friends of Tucson Optics (FoTO) Scholarship Program at the University of Arizona (UA).

Patil is entering the PhD program of the College of Optical Sciences at UA. She received a Master of Technology in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (India), where she also received a Bachelor of Technology in electrical engineering. Her research interests include quantum information and quantum optics.

In a statement made about her scholarship Patil said, "Moving toward graduate school, I wish to continue my study of quantum systems and their practical applications. I want to find the answer to how we can efficiently manipulate quantum phenomena to achieve outcomes beyond what are classically possible."

In recognition of the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences 50th-year anniversary in 2014, SPIE established this scholarship to further advance the vision for power and potential in optics and photonics by educating brilliant young minds.
