The annual award is given by the Spanish Royal Society of Physics (RSEF) and BBVA Bank Foundation (FBBVA) for significant commitment to education and contributions to the dissemination of physics.

Beléndez was honored for his extensive educational publications and presentations in the field of physics. He has published 71 papers with SPIE, primarily on holography, holographic recording materials, holographic optical elements, and optical storage, and is a coauthor of a paper to be presented at SPIE Photonics Europe in April. He is leader of the Group on Holography and Optical Processing at the university.

The award also recognizes his use of videos, blog entries, and articles published to the media, together with his work organizing events for the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL).

An essay he wrote in 2015 for the IYL blog about the invention of the laser is included in the recently published book, Inspired by Light: Reflections from the International Year of Light 2015. The book was produced by SPIE in concert with the European Physical Society and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics to celebrate the achievements of IYL. An electronic version of the book is available for download from SPIE.

Beléndez, who is also a Senior Member of SPIE, has master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Valencia in Spain.
