Conference award winners -- congratulations!

Winners of Pioneer Awards in the conference on Independent Component Analyses, Compressive Sampling, Large Data Analyses, Neural Networks, Biosystems, and Nanoengineering gathered for a panel discussion and photo on Friday morning. Award winners and conference organizers are, from left above, program committee member Anke Meyer-Bäse (Florida State University), conference cohair Liyi Dai (U.S. Army Research Office), Nobutaka Ono (Japan National Institute of Informatics), Paul Werbos (National Science Foundation), Joel Tropp (California Institute of Technology), Andrew Ewald (Johns Hopkins University), Michael McAlpine (Princeton University), conference chair Harold Szu (U.S. Army Research Office), and Yufeng Zheng (Alcorn State University).
Automatic Target Recognition

Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) conference chair Firooz Sadjadi (Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Labs) presented several best paper awards on Tuesday.
The Lockheed Martin ATR Best Student Paper Award winner was Satabdi Mukherjee (City University of New York) for "An approach to automatic detection of suspicious individuals in a Crowd" (9476-12). Runner up was Matthew Scherreik (Wright State University) for "An evaluation of open set recognition for FLIR images" (9476-23).
The Lockheed Martin ATR Best Paper Award winner was Sebastian Wong (Defense Science and Technology Organization, Australia) for "Mutual information for enhanced feature selection in visual tracking" (9476-2).

Thermosense: Thermal Infrared Applications
Two papers were honored with best paper awards sponsored by FLIR in the Thermosense: Thermal Infrared Applications conference on Thursday.
The Thermosense Best Paper Award was presented by conference chair Sheng-Jen (Tony) Hseih to Karlien D'huys, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, (at left below) for "Detection of seal contamination in heat-sealed food packaging based on active infrared thermography" (9485-52). The award included a FLIR One thermal camera, presented by FLIR Senior Systems Engineer Mark Nussmeier.
The Thermosense Best Student Paper was awarded by conference co-chair Joseph Zalameda to Hai Zhang (Université Laval) (below, right) for "Infrared thermography, ultrasound C-scan and microscope for non-destructive and destructive evaluation of 3D carbon fiber materials: a comparative study" (9485-33).
