BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA and CARDIFF, UK - Yesterday evening, at the 2019 Awards Banquet at SPIE Optics + Photonics in San Diego, SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, honored William H. Arnold with its President's Award. The SPIE President's Award is presented to an individual who, in the opinion of the President and the Board of Directors, has rendered a unique and meritorious service of outstanding benefit to the Society.

Arnold, a longtime SPIE Fellow and former SPIE President, has embodied a dedicated and generous commitment to SPIE through outstanding service, guidance, engagement, and leadership. Key contributions include his championship of the SPIE Advanced Lithography symposium and critical support for the creation and implementation of the National Photonics Initiative. His decades of work has ensured that SPIE continues to be relevant to industry, while assuring not only the betterment of the Society, but the entire photonics community.

"I was fortunate to get to know Bill and witness his adept leadership in action as he achieved key accomplishments, including strengthening our industrial relationships and supporting the National Photonics Initiative," said 2019 SPIE President Jim Oschmann who served on the SPIE Board of Directors when Arnold was President in 2013. "These represent but a small fraction of Bill's integrity and service to our community."
