BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA -- Valery Tuchin of Saratov State University (SSU) is the recipient of the 2016 Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for his book titled Light Scattering Methods and Instruments for Medical Diagnosis, 3rd ed., published by SPIE Press in 2015. The award is co-sponsored by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics and The Optical Society.

The Goodman Award, a biennial award funded by a personal gift from Joseph W. and Hon Mai Goodman, recognizes a recent and outstanding book in the field of optics and photonics that has contributed significantly to research, teaching, or the optics and photonics industry.

Tuchin, a Fellow of SPIE, accepted the award at SPIE Photonics Europe in Brussels this month.

The book covers topics such as optical coherence tomography, digital holography and interferometry, controlling optical properties of tissues, nonlinear spectroscopy, and imaging, all substantially updated from previous editions.

It is intended for use by researchers, teachers, and graduate or undergraduate students who specialize in the physics of living systems, biomedical optics and biophotonics, laser biophysics, and applications of lasers in biomedicine.

"The book provides global contributions to education and dissemination of technical information in the field of biomedical optics and biophotonics" said Qingming Luo, director of the Britton Chance Center for Biomedical Photonics at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Executive Deputy Director of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, and Vice President at HUST, in nominating Tuchin. "It is the most comprehensive and complete monograph in the world covering the urgent problems of tissue optics, spectroscopy, and imaging, and serves as a handbook, with more than 2,000 references and data for tissue optical properties summarized in dozens of tables."

Tuchin is a professor and Chair of Optics and Biophotonics at SSU. He heads the Laboratory of Laser Diagnostics of Technical and Living Systems of Precision Mechanics and Control Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Multidisciplinary Laboratory on Biophotonics of Tomsk State University.

His research interests include biophotonics, biomedical optics and laser medicine, and the physics of optical and laser measurements. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed papers and books, including his latest, Tissue Optics.

About SPIE

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, an educational not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based science, engineering, and technology. The Society serves nearly 264,000 constituents from approximately 166 countries, offering conferences and their published proceedings, continuing education, books, journals, and the SPIE Digital Library. In 2015, SPIE provided more than $5.2 million in support of education and outreach programs. www.spie.org
