The awards recognize interdisciplinary applications, theoretical innovation, and photo-optical instrumentation and design
BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA and CARDIFF, UK - Exceptional articles in interdisciplinary applications, theoretical innovation, and photo-optical instrumentation and design published in the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing, published by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, have been recognized with best paper awards. The honorees were selected by the journal's editorial board.
The journal is published online in the SPIE Digital Library and optimizes the communication of concepts, information, and progress among the remote sensing community. Ni-Bin Chang, professor of civil, environmental, and construction engineering at the University of Central Florida, is its editor-in-chief.
"Remote sensing estimation of surface oil volume during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico: scaling up AVIRIS observations with MODIS measurements" was chosen in the category of Interdisciplinary Applications for proposing that optical remote sensing observations from coarse-resolution satellite instruments can estimate the thickness and volume of large oil slicks in the vast ocean when some fine-resolution aircraft measurements are available. The authors are Chuanmin Hu, Lian Feng, and Frank Muller-Karger of the University of South Florida, College of Marine Science, St. Petersburg, Florida; Jamie Holmes of Abt Associates, Boulder, Colorado; Gregg A Swayze of the U.S. Geological Survey, Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center, Denver, Colorado; Ira Leifer and Christopher Melton of Bubbleology Research International, Goleta, California; Oscar Garcia of WaterMapping, LLC, Tallahassee, Florida; Ian MacDonald of Florida State University, Department of Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Science, Tallahassee, Florida; Mark Hess of Ocean Imaging, Littleton, Colorado; George Graettinger of NOAA Ocean Service, Seattle, Washington; and Rebecca Green of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Gulf of Mexico Region, New Orleans, Louisiana; all of the United States.
"Deep learning decision fusion for the classification of urban remote sensing data" was selected for Theoretical Innovation for illustrating significant advantages of a proposed deep-learning decision fusion traditional classifiers. The authors are Ghasem Abdi and Farhad Samadzadegan of the University of Tehran, College of Engineering, Faculty of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering, Tehran, Iran, and Peter Reinartz of the German Aerospace Centre, Remote Sensing Technology Institute, Department of Photogrammetry and Image Analysis, Wessling, Germany.
"Development of method for active alignment of multiple time delay and integration detectors in the optically butted focal plane assembly of high-resolution spaceborne imaging systems" was selected in the category of Photo-Optical Instrumentation and Design for demonstrating the assembly and alignment of multiple time delay and integration detectors in the focal plane assembly with high accuracy. The authors are Arti Sarkar, Manish Saxena, Nitesh Thapa, Anand Kumar, Himanshu K. Dave, and Somya S. Sarkar of the Indian Space Research Organisation, Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, and B. Narasiha Sharma of Nirma University, Institute of Science, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
The SPIE Digital Library contains more than 500,000 publications from SPIE journals, proceedings, and books, with approximately 18,000 new research papers added each year.
About SPIE
SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, an educational not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based science, engineering, and technology. The Society serves 257,000 constituents from 173 countries, offering conferences and their published proceedings, continuing education, books, journals, and the SPIE Digital Library. In 2018, SPIE provided more than $4 million in community support including scholarships and awards, outreach and advocacy programs, travel grants, public policy, and educational resources. www.spie.org.
