BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA and CARDIFF, UK - Exceptional articles in interdisciplinary applications, theoretical innovation, and photo-optical instrumentation and design published in the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing, published by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, have been recognized with best paper awards. The honorees were selected by the journal's editorial board.
The journal is published online in the SPIE Digital Library and optimizes the communication of concepts, information, and progress among the remote sensing community. Ni-Bin Chang, professor of civil, environmental, and construction engineering at the University of Central Florida, is its editor-in-chief.
"Remote sensing estimation of surface oil volume during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico: scaling up AVIRIS observations with MODIS measurements" was chosen in the category of Interdisciplinary Applications for proposing that optical remote sensing observations from coarse-resolution satellite instruments can estimate the thickness and volume of large oil slicks in the vast ocean when some fine-resolution aircraft measurements are available. "Deep learning decision fusion for the classification of urban remote sensing data" was selected for Theoretical Innovation for illustrating significant advantages of a proposed deep-learning decision fusion traditional classifiers. "Development of method for active alignment of multiple time delay and integration detectors in the optically butted focal plane assembly of high-resolution spaceborne imaging systems" was selected in the category of Photo-Optical Instrumentation and Design for demonstrating the assembly and alignment of multiple time delay and integration detectors in the focal plane assembly with high accuracy.
