SPIE Remote Sensing, Security and Defence to bring photonics focus to Dresden

CARDIFF, UK -- - Conference sessions on high-power laser systems, climate change education, remote sensing for agriculture and chemical threats, optronics, quantum cryptography, unmanned sensor networks, and optical countermeasure techniques are among topics to be covered at the co-located SPIE Remote Sensing and SPIE Security and Defence symposia in Dresden 23-26 September.

Together, the events provide a forum for researchers from more than 25 countries in Europe and elsewhere to present the latest research on remote sensing, security, and defence topics. Sponsored by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, the symposia -- the 20th for Remote Sensing and the 10th for Security and Defence -- will be held in the Internationales Congress Center.

A two-day exhibition featuring displays, electronic imaging components, detectors, infrared sources, and other technologies for security and defence will be held 24-25 September.

Technical attendees at either symposium have access to the free exhibition and plenary sessions at both.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) is offering a tour of its facilities in Jena on 27 September, open to up to 50 attendees. IOF is noted for comprehensive expertise in the entire process chain from the design of optical components and systems through system integration, and lists among its developments miniaturized imaging and projection systems for communication and safety, mirror systems for astronomy and aerospace, laser systems for materials processing, and 3D measuring systems for quality assurance, criminology and medicine. The tour will cover the following projects:

  • 3D data acquisition for biometrics
  • Fiber laser systems
  • Precision optics for earth observation systems
  • Infrared optics.

Visits with other Jena-based companies on the same day are under discussion and may be announced at a later date.

Remote Sensing plenary talks will be given by Eustace Dereniak (College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona), on novel imaging spectrometers and polarimeters, and Andreas Eckardt (German Aerospace Center) on very high-resolution imaging systems.

Remote Sensing symposium chair is Charles Bostater (Marine-Environmental Optics Lab and Remote Sensing Center, Florida Institute of Technology). Ulrich Michel (University of Education Heidelberg) is symposium co-chair.

Security and Defence plenary speakers will be Roland Sauerbrey, scientific director of Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, and Markus Jung of Rheinmetall Defence.

A special session will be dedicated to biological and medical applications for THz sensors.

Memorial sessions will honor the memory of Colin Lewis, former scientific advisor for the UK Ministry of Defence in Northern Ireland and a visiting professor at the University of Manchester. Lewis, who died in January, had chaired the conference on Optics and Photonics for Counterterrorism, Crime Fighting and Defence from its inception in 2004 through last year.

David Titterton (UK Defence Science and Technology Lab) and Reinhard Ebert (Fraunhofer-IOSB Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation) are Security and Defence symposium chair and co-chair, respectively.
