Presentations to cover more efficient solar cells, 'smarter' sensors for identifying molecules or proteins, high-performance printing advances
BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA -- International research in nano- and microscale materials and technologies with applications in solar cells, healthcare, printing, and other fields will be reported during SPIE Micro + Nano Materials, Devices, and Applications 2013 in Melbourne, Australia, next month. Dates are 8-11 December.

The event will feature nearly 200 presentations in a multidisciplinary forum on biomaterials and biological microdevices, micro and nanofluidics, photonics, fabrication, metrology, solar cell technologies, plasmonics, MEMS/NEMS, and nanomaterials.
Research in these areas enables promising new materials and applications across many fields including air, water, and food quality; energy; security; and medicine, noted conference chair James Friend, director of the MicroNano Research Facility at RMIT.
"Research activity at small scales is driving the convergence of traditionally disparate disciplines including engineering, science, biology, and medicine," Friend said. "With the construction of numerous new facilities across the Australasian region in support of this field and concomitant rapid growth in research output over just the past few years, an interdisciplinary forum among top researchers in nano- and microscale research is timely."
Among schedule highlights are several plenary talks:
Accepted papers will be published in the SPIE Digital Library as soon as approved after the event, and in print volumes and digital collections.
SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. The Society serves more than 235,000 constituents from approximately 155 countries, offering conferences, continuing education, books, journals, and a digital library in support of interdisciplinary information exchange, professional networking, and patent precedent. SPIE provided over $3.2 million in support of education and outreach programs in 2012.
