Paper Abstract
Manufacturing applications of expert systems offer industry methods to increase their overall productivity while lower their operating costs. Knowledge-based system technology has long reached the point where proof-of-principle systems can evolve into realizable aids to engineers in all phases of the manufacturing process. A growing area of interest to all manufacturing concerns, this paper reviews several knowledge-based systems in the area of diagnostics, planning and scheduling, control, and design. Systems in each of these areas are discussed with an emphasis on their application, knowledge-based system design elements, and level of implementation.
