Paper Abstract

There has been a continuing effort to define and develop spread spectrum image transmis-sion systems to provide antijam protection for a television link from small remotely piloted vehicles. The Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC), San Diego, California, has conducted studies in this area for some time under the sponsorship of DARPA. The bandwidth compres-sion system resulting from these studies consists of a horizontal cosine transform/vertical differential pulse code modulation process in conjunction with an 8:1 frame rate reduction using 256-by-256 picture element resolution. This paper describes the implementation of this bandwidth compression system in hardware suitable for inclusion in the Integrated Communication and Navigation System (ICNS) for the Army's AQUILA remotely piloted vehicle. The equipment described was built by the Advanced Technology Laboratories of RCA's Government Systems Division, Camden, New Jersey, under contract to NOSC.
