Mechanical Impulse Testing Techniques Via Computer Evaluation Of High-Speed Film Recording

Paper Abstract

The dynamic analysis of elements of mechanical systems is very important both from the operational aspect and from that of sensitivity to environmental disturbance. Thus determination of the transfer function T(jw) for the system under test is one of the most important aims of dynamic analysis. For an impulse at the input, linear systems respond their weight-function at the output with the Fourier transform of that giving the transfer function. All mechanical systems giving optically transformable translation as an output for an impulse at the input can be analysed using high-speed film recordings. We determined the transfer functions of electromechanical systems, to the elements of which transducers could not be fitted due to the disturbing effect of their mass. The characteristics of the weight-function and the shape of its spectra for the system under test can be estimated in advance; one can probably set a suitable duration for the recording, and the correct frame frequency to satisfy the requirements of Shannon's sampling law. After digitalisation the information stored in the film was processed by computer. The paper describes the applied measuring techniques, the experience gained, and the results obtained; some of the film shots recorded for analysis are to be presented for illustration purposes.
