Paper Abstract

Imaging sensor performance is discussed as a function of compounded degradations of the image signal. Results of a computer model for a very long standoff reconnaissance Electro-Optical (E-0) sensor are presented, revealing relative contributions by various degradation sources. Current E-0 reconnaissance sensors and displays are surveyed, suggesting two additional, often overlooked sources of image signal degradation. The two sources, image subsampling motivated by display limitations and random bit errors during transmission and recording, are analytically discussed.
