Paper Abstract

An optical system has been developed for measuring the slippage of a flexible fanbelt in an automobile engine. The system is based on the laser Doppler effect and measures the difference in angular velocity of two bodies, rotating at almost the same speed. Using a differential principle, the system output is independent of pulley eccentricity, belt deformations and engine vibrations.
