Portable Laser Tools For Vibration Measurement

Paper Abstract

This paper describes three portable laser tools which have been developed for on-site use by mechanical engineers. They allow non-contact time-resolved vibration velocity measurement of surfaces which are hot, light or rotating and thus complement the accelerometer in situations where use of the latter is precluded. The first two instrutments measure normal to surface oscillation and allow the engineer to simply "point" a laser beam at a surface to obtain a measurement. They are the Laser Vibrometer which has the ability to measure torsional oscillation of rotating components of arbitrary cross-section in situ whilst irnoring solid body motions. All three instruments are currently undergoing commercial development. examples of presented.
