Paper Abstract

Objective formulations of scintillation camera specifications are necessary for purchasing, acceptance testing, quality assurance, and intercomparison of imaging results. Objective formulations have been successfully implemented with respect to spatial resolution but not with respect to field uniformity. This lag has resulted from a failure to recognize the importance of higher order statistical contributions in addition to first order terms incorporated in customary quantitative indices of integral and differential uniformity. In addition to re-analyzing first order variations, we have introducted SGLDM parameters to specify global texture and analyzed six local texture parameters of which the local gradient was the most predicative of nonuniformity. Moreover, we have examined the effects of matrix renormalization on both first order terms and texture (global and local). Lastly, simulations of camera fields incorporating configurations of phototubes reveal that systematic and statistical errors can be combined to yield the observed response of existing scintillation cameras.
