Modeling a 3D world: challenges, progress, and opportunities

Paper Abstract

Modeling the world has been done in various forms and formats. From traditional 2D maps, with well established set of rules and conventions, to globe spheres that attempt to model the earth closer to reality. Now with the advance in computer graphics and computing resources, modeling a digitally interactive 3d earth has become more possible and achievable. This paper attempts to describe ESRI's 3D visualization systems that could be employed to attain the creation of such a digital globe. In particular emphasis will be given how such a system could incorporate analytical and modeling capability as well as a discussion on its data delivery and consumption paradigm. Where appropriate, solutions in the form of workflows and software design approaches are presented to alleviate some of the challenges such systems currently face. The paper will conclude with forward looking assessment into the opportunities such systems promise and the unique position they have for the advancement of Geographic Sciences as a whole and digital earth modeling in particular.
