Paper Abstract
Public Health organizations throughout the world are called upon to be at the
forefront of responding to emerging infectious disease events or natural catastrophes such
as the Haitian and Chilean earthquakes. One of the key components to effective public
health engagement is situational awareness.
Situational awareness means understanding what is going on around you. Whilst that
may seem to be a simple statement it is not. True situational awareness means acquiring
all relevant information about the event and translating that information into actionable
knowledge.
