Paper Abstract

This paper discusses the imaging properties of scanning heterodyne microscope systems. In particular, the response to objects out of the focal plane is considered. A differential system is described (the indirect interference differential interferometer) which has confocal properties. This system gives extended focus imaging while retaining phase information. In addition, it is capable of imaging phase objects while rejecting much of the information from closely spaced planes. The system should thus be capable of three-dimensional phase imaging.
