Single-frequency Nd:YAG laser development for space communication

Paper Abstract

The present diode laser-pumped Nd:YAG 1.06-micron wavelength ring laser for free-space communications is able to operate in single-frequency TEM 00 mode through the use of the 'twisted-mode cavity' (TMC) technique. Attention is given to passive stabilization methods that make possible the generation of a laser linewidth of less than 10 kHz. The absolute stabilization of the laser on a molecular absorption line via TMC is noted to be especially advantageous for intersatellite communications system applications.
