Relativistic klystron amplifier I: high-power operation

Paper Abstract

An evaluation is made of the performance of a Relativistic Klystron Amplifier (RKA) at 1.3 GHz. Problems are found to be associated with the RKA's RF pulse generation which place an upper limit on the RKA's operating range. RF-breakdown initiated by the X-ray flux also puts a limit on the electron-beam voltage. Large RF output pulses require use of the phase-locking property of the RKA.
