Time-varying spectrum-based detection of land mines using ground penetrating radar

Paper Abstract

Ground penetrating radar systems provide an alternative for detection and classification of anti-personnel landmines, in particular, due to the minimal metal content in the structure of modern mines. We propose a new detection scheme based on a discriminator as a functional of time-varying spectra of radar returns. It is experimentally shown that the statistics of the discriminator vary with the terrain properties and must be adaptively estimated from background returns. The proposed scheme is better suited than other techniques due to FFT processing. The results shown are based on radar returns obtained under different environments and outperform previously suggested techniques due to the higher detectability of mines.
