Paper Abstract

A microscope using surface plasmon resonance is described, which images 2-D distributions of refractive indices and/or surface proffles of dielectric specimens. Surface plasmon is excited at a metaldielectric interface by using the Kretschmann's configuration, which consists of a glass prism deposited with a thin silver film and a specimen. This microscope gives the distribution of the refractive index with high sensitivity, if the specimen is in contact with the silver film. In experiments, we imaged such objects as biological tissues and optical wave guide.
