Noticeable loss: a metric for capturing loss pattern for continuous media applications

Paper Abstract

With the proliferation of Continuous Media (CM) applications on the Internet, it has become important to be able to devise suitable metrics that capture their performance. One such metric identified is packet loss, which results from statistical multiplexing over-loads, missed deadlines and other network pathologies. While work exist in literature on estimating the packet loss ratio, little work has been done on capturing the actual loss process itself. For the same loss ratio, CM applications perceive different QoS for different loss patterns. Thus, it is important to be able provide simple means of capturing the los process for users as well as for operators. We provide one such approach in this paper. We also describe a control algorithm that regulates the loss process while handling multiplexing overloads. This algorithm, which can be used in a statistically shared resource such as a server or a network buffer, preemptively discards packets based on the 'distance' to the previously lost packet of the same stream during overloads. The experimental results involving Variable Bit Rate video streams indicate that the algorithm greatly improves the QoS by spreading out losses for various streams with disparate loss requirements.
