Paper Abstract

This paper proposes a method to optimize the utilization of the internal resources of WAN routers. Associated with admission control and policy control techniques of existing protocols, like RSVP or RTP, is allows to better utilize intermediate nodes internal resources. The scope is allowing best-effort traffic to get better performances from WANs. Our method is based on a statistical interpretation of VBR streams compressed by means of the MPEG-1 algorithm. This high level analysis of the videos, namely the scene level, leads to the definition of a forecasting scheme.
