Paper Abstract
A first generation ATM-HFC system is actual in standardization phase in IEEE 802.14 and DAVIC. Some important issues are still open e.g. frame format, burst size and preamble. This paper addresses these issues and suggests possible solutions. In addition, access methods are discussed and analyzed in terms of future upgradability and interoperability. The differences between access methods are analyzed for the physical layer, showing under which circumstances equal levels of performances can be obtained. At last, a case study of an HFC concept is described, performed in the framework of the ACTS project: ATHOC.
