Square wave excitability in optically injected quantum-dot lasers (Conference Presentation)

Paper Abstract

Optically injected quantum dot lasers display many unique nonlinear phenomena and, in particular, are excellent testbeds for excitable dynamics. We show that – in contrast to most systems – both Type I and Type II excitability can be found. We focus on the recent discovery of the Type II dynamics, which manifests as square wave excitability. The phenomenon arises via an optothermal instability that breaks a bistability and renders the system excitable. Numerical analysis of the system shows that the onset of the square wave regime has two potential origins: One via a bistability and the other via a canard explosion.
