Plasmonics: is it an alternative to photonics? (Conference Presentation)

Paper Abstract

Plasmonics is an emerging alternative to photonics. Plasmonics promises ultra-compact size, fast speed, operation across a broad spectral range and a new level of CMOS integration. Yet, plasmonics also has a reputation for being a high-loss technology. In this review, we will discuss opportunities for plasmonics in the field of optical communications, microwave photonics or THz sensing. As practical examples we will highlight latest results achieved with 100 GHz bandwidth plasmonic modulators and detectors or new plasmonic THz detection schemes.
