The hierarchical pairing method to estimate kinetic characteristics of fused silica exit surface damage particle ejection

Paper Abstract

The dual-probe time-resolved shadowgraphic microscopy system can observe the particle ejection phenomenon during laser-induced fused silica component damage, and the system can acquire two consecutive images with adjustable time intervals within one damage event. The paper presents a method for measuring speed and size automatically of the ejected particles utilizing the two consecutive images. The core work of automatic measurement method is particle detection and pairing by means of hierarchical pairing method, and estimates the instantaneous speed and size of the ejected particles. In hierarchical pairing method, the ideas of unimodal threshold segmentation, adaptive area thresholds and adaptive displacement thresholds are designed and applied. Experiments performed on experimental image pairs showed that the method is helpful to explore the kinetic properties of ejected particles.
