Practical TDM fiber sensor network

Paper Abstract

A practical TDM (time division multiplex) fiber sensor network is presented in this paper, which has been applied to measure liquid level, interface and temperature of gasoline. The topology structure of the network has been designed carefully to save the fiber cable, light sources and detectors. The most important components in this network are couplers and fiber delayers, which achieved the distribution of light power and the separation of light signal, respectively. By arranging these components rationally, we have finished a system involving thirty sensors, array of couplers, one light source and one detector. In this paper we describe the time-division theory of the network and calculate the maximum content of fiber sensors by analyzing the loss of power in detail. At the same time, the stability and the reliability of the network also are discussed in detail. As a result, we get the precision of 2 mm, 5 mm and 0.2 degrees Celsius for level, interface and temperature, respectively.
