Automated assembly of 127um pitched multichannel PM-fiber connectors (Conference Presentation)

Paper Abstract

Densly packed multi-channel fiber arrays have manifold applications in the field of photonic integrated circuits, telecom and many more. The assembly of the fiberoptical connectors is highly challenging. The requirements for the lateral and angular final assembly precision are below 1° and 1 micron. At Fraunhofer IPT an automated assembly machine for PM-fiber connectors with a 127 micon pitch has been successfully implemented and installed in industry. With the patent-pending fiber manipulator and a computer vision-based stressrod inspection system an efficient manufacturing of fiber arrays is possible. The system consists of a tray-based feeding system which can carry up to 32 individual fibers, stripped and cleaved to be automatically assembled. After the operator-guided loading of the machine the remaining process is carried out by the machine autonomously. A handling system picks up individual fiber and automatically clamps the fiber tip on the acrylic coating for the angular alignment about the fiberaxis. Next, the fiber is brought into the field of view of a telecentric camera system that detects both orientation of the V-groove holder and the fiber angle. Through a piezo-based rotational manipulator the alignment between fiber and V-groove holder is done. After alignment a dispensing system applies a precise amount of UV-curing adhesive for the individual fiber fixation. The process is repeated until the defined amount of fibers is assembled. As a last step a lid is mounted for final fixation of the fibers in the V-grooves. The process can be transferred to direct fiber-chip coupling and related applications.
