Paper Abstract

While many advances have been made in networking, computer architecture, and operating systems, the performance of the combination of these elements as a networked host has been disappointing. Only a fraction of the potential physical layer bandwidth is available to applications running on hosts. This tutorial will focus on the performance of network sybsystems which support asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). From the physical layer through the ATM layer, potential bottlenecks will be identified and characterized to advocate a systems oriented approach to performing future performance optimizations.
