Paper Abstract
We present fast and simple method for calculation the mode field diameter of arbitrary order guided mode propagating over weakly-guiding optical fibers with an arbitrary refractive index profile in the core region bounded by single solid outer cladding. Proposed method is based on modified Gaussian approximation extended to the considered problem. We tested it for prediction the insertion loss at splice of conventional singlemode and multimode optical fibers with precision transversal offset and compared the results with the measured values, getting a close matching.
